Egyptian journalists plan to protest this weekend in Cairo over the detention and charging of six colleagues from the independent fact-checking outlet Matsadaash, according to the Guardian.
Authorities arrested the six journalists last week and charged them with terrorism offences. Egyptian authorities accused them in a statement of operating without a license and producing false news on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is outlawed in Egypt.
The detained journalists from Matsadaash allege they were tortured while in police custody and that forced confessions were extracted from them. These allegations form the basis for the planned weekend demonstration by Egyptian press freedom advocates.
